Indian TV news channels have run out of ideas. On the eve of Rajnikant-starrer Sivaji, reportedly the most expensive film ever made in India, every channel suddenly had an urge to compare Rajni with Amitabh Bachchan. I saw as many as four top channels hotly debating who is the greater actor—Amitabh Bachchan or Rajnikant. And on prime time. Wonder why? Have we run out of real issues?
The debate itself seems senseless to me. Just because Rajnikant is allegedly the highest paid actor in the country, does it make him greater than Amitabh? If greatness is measured by compensation, then Hritik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and many others would be considered greater than AB because they’re all paid more. Compensation is a factor of economics, not competence. Rajni and AB are great in their own ways. Both have achieved unparalleled success in their careers and have unprecedented fan following. Why should they be compared?
